Re: Cali's arrival
"Okay so this is a digital device then. Back where I came from, the magnetic field would mess something like this up. It was a bit more easier having an electric device like the Tuppi instead, easier to repair and lasts longer." Cali cheerily summed it up and yeah...I don't think she has either an exhausted or bored setting.
no subject
that word does not exist where Viktor's from, sorry.
"What does that mean? Anyway, it's a fairly sophisticated device, I can tell this much. Magnetic? Eh, perhaps. Have you checked?"
Viktor does not ask, does not even think in any part of his mind to ask what are you, fyi, because who cares right now, and there are various species (
for example look up his professor and boss, Heimerdinger, if you're curious) in Runeterra. One hand on his cane, he puts another to his forehead, as, well, he's beginning to get a headache. Since coming to this place, he hasn't found any good medicine. Well, at least he's not coughing, yet, so he'd say he's perfectly fine, if anybody who he's not friends or partners with asks. And maybe even if a friend asked.
"how long have you, uh, been here? In this world? Just for... comparison."
no subject
The thought of checking for a magnetic field hadn't occurred to Cali though nor the idea that Viktor was from an entirely different timeline than her own. To her, this is basically a wish came true to be on something that looked very much like the fabled Earth she heard so much about. However, Cali does pick up on the headache that Viktor was starting to have (doctor senses be scary its true).
"Oh, I didn't even think to check for a magnetic field yet and I just woke up here this morning. May I ask though, is the pain starting behind the brow bone or does it feel like a tight band around the forehead?"
no subject
"Digital," Viktor says, "sounds like it should describe something more elegant than just that. However, that, uhnh, is probably only because it's my first time hearing the world."
Cough. Cough.
Viktor does what he can NOT to draw attention to sudden coughs of his. If you're just going by his behaviour before a short series of coughs and after, this means [
or should mean absolutely nothing] as far as the young scientist's concerned (well, he's not middleaged yet, so, young)."Insanely hard to repair?"
Sounds like a good challenge.
Now, said with a small smirk, "Perhaps I should try repairing one, once it nearly expires."
Unsaid: sounds like a good challenge and stimulation.
As to her question...
Blink.
Blink.
Giving her a slightly owlish look, the potential patient asks,
"But you're not, hrm, a professional doctor? Or- are you studying t' become one?"
If she is studying though, Viktor decides that... well, she should be warned before trying to tackle an S lvl challenge if she's only D lvl or something so to speak. And yes, this place is no Academy, but Viktor thinks - only sometimes - that kind people are owed basic politeness and manners - especially if they are trying to help, even if it's an utterly lost case.
"I have, according to doctors, anywhere between three and eleven months left to live - my body, that is, if you are a believer in one of several kinds of afterlife."
There are young doctors who find comfort in some gods or others, or other fairytales. Viktor wouldn't offend such a belief, even though t'is not for him, personally.
circa.
His preferred afterlife is memories. Professor Heimerdinger's. Sky Young's. Jayce Talis's. Other colleagues'. Some poor people's like Viktor, especially some small children hopefully, for whom Hextech will be a miracle of some kind.
Memory - not of Viktor's face or name, but of his footprints on the world, in some way.
Though too ambitious, perhaps, but, well...
If nothing else, ms Sky Young's memories and Jayce's memories. That much - is an assured part in this somewhat introverted 'religion'. Heimerdinger's memories - a less certain part. Other colleagues - eh, only on optimistic days.
This is Viktor's 'religion'.
"Just... fair warning, miss. Five months, the most realistic prognosis I had so far said. If you still wish to know of my symptoms"
And, unsaid, are, as medicine student? Or whatever you are? not disappointed yet,
"I will gladly tell you of my, ech, symptoms. It's nothing special - a quite common illness in some parts of the Undercity. If you'd like a case study, I'm happy to help."
A few of his Pokemon suddenly leave Pokeballs. A few ghostly pokemon among them.
Viktor blinks and says, "Rio, that's enough. Go back to your ball. I shall pet you later. You hear me? Later. Now I'm discussing some matters with this kind young women. Back to ball, Rio. Good girl. Yes, now. Good girl, Rio. Goo--"
Cough.

Cali wasn't sure what pain relief medications was legal here or what else could be done for Viktor to keep him comfortable and able to enjoy what time was left to live. All Cali knows right now is there is someone that needs help and it's her job to ensure that he is receiving the care needed. One thing she does know was that she'll likely have to hunt for something digital and broken for Viktor to entertain himself with as that's really good for mental stimulation. Cali goes to look and see where she could have Viktor sit down on as she goes to respond to his question in a warm, caring tone.
"I just graduated from Medical school where I came from and received my license on the same day, but, I can listen to your symptoms though and I can see where we can go from there. Did your doctors have you on any certain pain medications or any specific hospice care routines to make things comfortable for you?"
Excuse him he's from Piltover ya can look it up XD pft
"Excuse me, miss, but I'm not bored of my life yet. Nor am I going to throw all my, eh, earthly possessions away yet, nor my research. Forget any... hospice care... when it comes to me, ms doctor."
Tch.
He did not raise his voice. He does not raise it now. His cadence is steady and tone of voice almost icy.
"...forget I've said anything, Miss. Doctor."
If he did not look so polite, the word doctor would sound like a quiet curse directed at her. Perhaps it still does. Half secretly.
He looks almost calm - but as a doctor, she can probably see suddenly seething quiet irritation flowing through him. Very quiet, now, after his words. Like
Not a waterfall, but a rain that can drip drip drip erode something slowly without violent acts. If such rain had a soul, could one call it hostile?
Ah--
"My apologies, kind miss. Doctor. Hospice care would be, hrm, wasted on a cripple from the Undercity who can't stop moving for a day. I do appreciate your inquiries, though. Very kind of you."
The words...It's still like a metaphorical rain hitting mountain rocks. It's just that mountain rocks are not going to notice - or would they? - especially as the tone is now bordering on the most polite ever.
If Viktor could hear her thoughts and thought she might euthanise him, he could strangle her right now. In self defense.
Even if Janna came to him and told him that he's dying in June. Viktor would say, well, fine, I need to tell professor Heimerdinger and Jayce all my half baked ideas right now, that will be so embarassing, but I know they will research stuff - slowly. Beggars can't be choosers. I will mess up even Jayce's sleep schedule for a time, but he will forgive me next year or someday. S fine
Ah okay XD Yeah, Cali is from a high mortality rate space colony, so she's a bit confused :P
Cali wasn't from something fancy like Plitover, so she doesn't understand the reaction all too much. The deaths were she came from were often pretty miserable and rather painful ones, most hope they'd be taken by the lethal corrosive fog instead. It's pretty clear that where Cali came from, it could be comparable to Viktor's world version of the Undercity, but less crime and more radioactive horrors. I don't think Cali is though picking up on the hostility from Viktor from it, she's reading more as upset and having inadvertently offended him somehow.
Understendable and V would get it. But well... if he lived say in a discworld and death came for him
Headshake,
"I've spoken too harshly. Perhaps hospice care is better where you come from. Could I still spend my days in my laboratory, if I perhaps spent two nights weekly in hospice care, where you come from? If not, that is pointless. Boredom would murder me before my lungs could finally do that."
Ehhh....
"I did not truly mean to criticise your suggestion. I knew people who had such preferences. For, mhm, hospice care. That felt nice for them, I am sure. Old people. Children, if they could just get enough shiny toys while in care - I made some toys even, that felt nice, for a time, even if it helped nothing."
His voice softens and he's not hostile now.
"If you know any child in need of a toy, tell me and I'll make one. Though it might be ugly, sorry, I'm not a professional toy maker."
He's not. And he is not hostile anymore.
"Viktor. It's a pleasure, Dr Macabre."
Hmm...
"As for my illness - it's simply the Grey disease, though I don't know if you'd be fsmiliar. Half a lifetime exposure to slightly poisonous gasses, nothing much - but that does have an effect, on the lungs, you see. It is corrosive - and, ah, I live elsewhere now, don't worry. I moved out to the topside. For health reasons. To breathe. So one would think it's all good now. However, as a doctor, you surely would understand that what's broken can't always be fixed."
He gives her a small smile.
"It's not anybody's fault."
Ah XD Yeah, I have a feeling Viktor and Mr. Teatime would've had a pretty interesting conversation
"I've never heard of Grey Disease before, but that sounds horrible, lung damage is really hard to bounce back from. I'll do what I can to help you out though, I'll try and make it as comfortable as possible so you can enjoy life as much as possible." Cali said as she sensed the tension lower and goes to talk to calmly to Viktor after what happened there along with the disease Viktor has.
Cali listened to Viktor as he spoke, she smiled behind her mask at the offer as it truly was a lovely plan, "I think any child would happy with a toy you made, it means something that way. You put time, love, and energy into it, that's what makes it beautiful to any child that receives it."
This left one more thing though, explaining where Cali came from as it's clear, Viktor likely didn't know about the Exile Colonies or the rather nightmarish conditions they're in.
"Where I came from, we have a lot of radioactive contaminated sites with reactor plant being at about eighteen sieverts currently. Sometimes, you really can't bounce back from that if you inadvertently wander into it. Normally options are offered if the patient was exposed to eight or higher sieverts during scavenging for parts." Cali explains a bit where she came from, though she is avoiding the rather dreadful corrosive fog, that one could be a bit too much for Viktor.
Ha ha yup. Plus. My headcanons. Nothing impossible. XD
[I forgot too. So yeah Viktor would be healthy yay. Just disabled (leg) cuz he can live with that)
But this is just voicesting so. He can cough some. As a treat. Pft.
Viktor: I hate coughing, it's gross, I get blood on stuff. So unsanitary in the lab. :/
/ooc]
[Ah, Viktor gets it now. Mhm, radioactive waste, third worst thing after Grey, biochemanical weapons etc.
Though. Before knowing about the Gray.... Jayce had once idly mentioned, three years ago, that in the ancient times, people believed that magic is toxic to people's souls if it's done out of negative emotions and not positive ones. It was something like a belief that bad mages are accidentally destroying themselves and that's good. Jayce had read it in some ooold book and shared it with Viktor as something funny. and then they wrote that oldest evil mages only live sixty years at most. Am so glad the Mage who saved my mother and me is good. Viktor shrugged and joked that the mage is probably evil and that the mage just had a change of heart at seeing a random helpless little boy, or was trying to save own soul, just using an innocent woman and innocent child to appease own guilt. And that if Jayce ever meets some old mage again - well then, the mage is surely good.
After learning for sure of Viktor's prognosis
A week later, Viktor while taking out trash noticed a book in a trashbin. That book Jayce had once considered so funny, a book, written by some anonymous author signed only as H., the book titled "Myths about Arcane and Void and Time Travel and Noxus and Ionia and Piltover, Some Even Accurate, Might Be Amusing in My Opinion" in how wrong it surely was and made his light reading. Without saying a thing, Viktor scooped up all the pages - Jayce had been very rough with that book for no reason apparently- and Viktor took the book home. Without telling Jayce. He would never know and trash was free to take, after all. Viktor had read the book afterwards, finding the book exceedingly funny - really, it hit a specific sense of humour - so he was now happy that it landed in the trashbin because apparently it no longet aligned with his lab partner's sense of humour. For some petty reason.]
Hah..
"I did not mean any, hm, disrespect," Viktor utters, with 98% sincerity now. "And thank you. Really, you overestimate my toymaking skills just like my professor does and like my partner does, but thank you. Honestly."
"I do respect all doctors. Even the worst of their kind have accidentally saved a life or two, even if only for greed or other reasons - that matters not. Especially if they've saved an Undercity child or two, or even a topside one. There is no greater cause than that, in my mind - whatever the personal reasons."
"And... somebody I know perhaps well says that death can be a mercy."
The Doctor. Singed.
"Perhaps I am a ruthless man. I won't take mercy on myself, sorry to say, and I'll scream and beg for no mercy, the day death comes for me. In religions, death has form. I wish I believed. Were I a believer- how great it would be to, ehhh, perhaps kick in Death's nuts. Too much? Then maybe just bite his neck. Leave a mark."
"Ah. My apologies. I only shared such fantasy with a doctor once. When I was sixteen. Dammit, this weird place makes one's mind regress. Maybe I shall make toys, today, after all."
"Hmm. If you tell me when you're free, we could arrange a medical appointment? Not for hospice care, but.... ah. Excuse me for changing the topic, but yesterday my leg was acting up. And I had no pills. It's just this place. I didn't go to the hospital because my Pokemon get bored in balls, I could not do that to them."
Nice :'D Mr. Teatime was my favorite from The Hogfather, he was such a fun character X3
"Hey, it's not your fault, none of this is, you're dealing with something really awful and that was a pretty natural response. It sounds like you had every right to be angry, the doctors from your home don't sound very nice at all. I am more than happy to make an appointment with you right now if you want to get pain medication in for your leg." Cali went to reassure as she helps Viktor out a bit.
"If it makes you feel better, a lot of folks feel similar about Death over on Orion 34, one of which wanted to hand Death the radioactive scrap metal in retaliation. We're pretty relaxed when it comes to religion or lack there of, it's whichever helps one gets through the day. If you want, what toy project would you like to do? It sounds like a lot of fun." Cali kept that pretty happy and warm tone going as she spotted a bench for Viktor to sit on for a bit to rest the leg.
I love everybody in Hogfather... have you seen the movie adaptation? It's surprisingly nice- good I
Stupid leg, should've kept to habits.
"Surely you're busy with actually important patients, but, when can we meet?"
In Piltover, Viktor is almost always the last patient - well, he's a trencher, after all. He knows that if he told prof Heimerdinger that... but, well, Viktor does have his pride, sorry to say.
"Hah... When I was still undeground, one of my friends said I should NOT wish to give the wolf or whatever death might be a hickey. That that makes me evil. So I wondered. When I was a teen. And then decided, eh, okay, I will just be a villain who does good things. I forgot all about that, later."
Hmm. Eh, Viktor's only half serious, judging from his face now, anyway, anybody can see that much.
It's one of Pratchett's best works X3 I love the movie big time, it's my holiday tradition :'D
"It could be the sudden change in environment, that could've triggered your leg pain." Cali thought out loud as she thought over what could've cause the leg to act up suddenly before she gave an honest response, "I haven't been assigned any patients yet, so I'm fully open and ready to give you an appointment."
Cali goes to help Viktor to be seated on the bench to rest the leg a bit before giving a pretty adorable chuckle, "Well that's a bit silly of your friend there, we don't know if Death wouldn't not be approving of a bite to the neck. For all we know, Death could've wanted that the whole time."
mine too wow XD also. Monstrous Regiment... I wish there was a movie... and Equal Rites... Witches..
Viktor says, smirking.
And then,
"Environment, huh? Entirely possible. My 'Pokemon' are worried for me, because of my leg, so I should do something. Heimer's especially worried. Jayjay, too. Sky as well. Only Melmedarda, Melly if you want a pet name for her, is a bit distant. She's not a Ghost, though, she's a psychic. And looks like that animal from another continent. [Viktor lets Melly out of the ball. Melly steps away a few steps immediately, looking cautious. She's a Girafarig.] These are all ghost types or something some are psychic types - and I think they've got me confused with somebody else, because I see no reason for their immediate affection towards me. Except Melly. One can count on Melly to behave properly, always, [Viktor says, with a small smile]. Ah, there's also Salo, but she just hates me and often refuses to leave the Ball. I don't like him, either, hence the name. Though perhaps she's offended by the male name - would a she-pokemon find that offensive? JayJay does not seem to mind, though. Nor Heimer, who is also a she, I just didn't know Heimer is a she, not knowing much 'bout Pokemon species, at first."
[It's apparent that Viktor even after not too many days here does find PocketMonsters fascinating, even though he might deny it if anybody asked directly, at first.]
Oh man yeah they need to have films too X3 I'm so happy that 'The Wryd Sisters' became a
Cali is laughing along big time as honestly, the feeling was mutual from where she came from in regards to death and a lot of the colonists there would happily add their own quips about it.
"If only, I know some back home that'd gladly offer Death a pint of bourbon if it meant gaining two decades worth of life as well even if Death wasn't their type either." Cali chuckled along, clear in her voice that this was a spot on commentary.
"I think that's probably what's going on, weather and the human body can be pretty funny things in a not so fun way at times. Your Pokemon seem to love you very much though and care about your wellbeing, though Salo is a funny one for sure. I know of kids back home being named something along the lines of 'Salt'N Pepper' or 'Crayon', so Salo seems to be a pretty acceptable name." Cali goes to fish out a couple of the raspberry jam stickers for Viktor's Pokemon that are out, she has learned immediately all Pokemon are precious and adorable.
1/2😶 ... movie? How did I miss it? I watched Colour of Magic and Hogfather, played that old comp
Computer game - though only thanks to my elder brother... heard of tv series (will watch someday if it actually existd) but how did we not know about sisters movie? Wow. Thanks.Also. Maybe not. Pft. /ooc]

Yes. A carnal joke plus different kind of body joke. Viktor has, in his life, visited an undercity brothel two (2) times. Once, when he was sixteen, and second time when he was twenty seven, not too long after the first HexTech success (unrelatedly). One can learn things there. Various info hard to come by, elsewhere.
"Apparently I look like a virgin. I could always tell death deity that I must marry my love first and need time. Death would go away out of pity - not knowing it's all a ruse. As nobody desires me."
He chuckled.
"My Pokemòn seem to love me for no reason. I have yet to properly earn their unconditional affection. They're, hrn, silly that way."
His gaze softens.
"They're like Rio that--- nevermind."
"Crayon? Cha, could be a nice name for another Pokemon. Or perhaps Harold. He's a fuzzy minded Enforcer, so old I used to secretly ALMOST envy the man."
I managed to find it on Youtube some years back, the animation is pretty fun to watch too X3
"Ought to send in the wedding wine to sell the ruse to Death, then they'll have to give a full life that way." Cali joked along after giving Viktor's Pokemon some scratch n' sniff stickers before returning her attention, "I think it's because your Pokemon know you're a very good person, that's why they love you so much and get concerned for you. Though, I agree, Crayon would be a pretty adorable Pokemon name for sure."
There's a term that's been used somewhere before when referring to Cali's disposition...I think it was a 'Cinnamon Roll'? It sounds like the correct term as Cali goes to thinking carefully on what pain relief can be used to help Viktor's leg.
I'm still wondering where to app but I think here would be fun
"crank it. Compliment Death in abundance and offer a sacrifice to keep it at bay, perhaps? Gods they do love them some, eh, sacrifices. I could sacrifice my left hand - I'm a righty - and--"

For twenty seconds, no, for even more time, he accidentally absolved himself - no - almost forgot--- who he was, now - what he was--
"There's no version of me that's good," Viktor utters, suddenly. "In a pursuit of life, I've caused a death of an innocent woman - intelligent assistant with dreams of her own - and with her such innocent unrequited love--- I chased greatness, like a dog chasing its own tail, I chased the Sun, instead of deciding on reaching..."
"...Sky... she suffered for my hubris and--"
Ahh.
Viktor turns away and would shrink now if he was able.
"At least I shall serve the life sentence right, now, soon. Mother Nature, what a good executioner. I must tell my Partner next time I see him that I'm a coldblooded murderer. If I don't tell him, my timely death will break his heart a little. Anybody's so close would, he's just a kind, good, sensitive individual. With a hubris of his own, but no blood on his strong hands. Yes, I must tell Jayce that I caused Sky to desintegrate. Otherwise, I'm secretly soon making House Talis mourn an undeserving of it accidental killer."
"Disgusting."
A concerned Shuppet suddenly hovers above its Poke trainer.
"Go, Jayjay. You can't make this about your cuteness. Go to your ball. I will feed you later. Surely that's all you might want of me. Tell Heimer and Young to go away, too. You don't want my company."
Shuppet named Jay tries to pull at Viktor's hair.
"Go away, J. I'm thinking," Viktor utters.
